MAHWAH, NJ (November 22, 2005) -- Sophomore guard Nerlande Nicolas scored the final six points of the game in the final 36 seconds to lift Rutgers-Newark to a 62-58 New Jersey Athletic Conference women's basketball win over Ramapo in the Bradley Center.
Nicolas, who poured in 14 of her 17 points in the second half, knotted the score at 58-58 with a layup with just 36 seconds left, then dropped in four free throws in as many attempts in the final 15 seconds as the Scarlet Raiders (2-1, NJAC 1-0) gave the Roadrunners (2-1, NJAC 0-1) their first loss of the young season in the NJAC opener for both teams.
Nicolas also finished with nine rebounds, three steals and three assists while senior center Christyal Anderson (Newark, NJ/University) posted her third straight double-digit rebounding effort with 10 boards and eight points.
Freshman guard Youngor Kehleay came off the bench to pour in 15 points for the Raiders who also got nine points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals from sophomore forward Toni Roselli (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary's).
After a tight first half, the Raiders seized the lead just a minute into the second half on a Roselli 3-point jumper. Rutgers-Newark pushed the lead to 54-44 on a Nicolas 3-pointer with 7:57 left. But, Ramapo was not through.
The Roadrunners reeled off a 14-2 run over the next six minutes behind six points by freshman Denee Vadell to take a 58-56 lead. Vadell, who tied Nicolas for game-high scoring honors with 17, dropped in a layup with 2:16 left. But, neither team could find the bottom of the net over the next 1:40, setting the stage for Nicolas' heroics.
