Rutgers-Newark commemorated "World AIDS Week" on Nov. 28 through Dec. 1 to raise awareness and educate students about HIV and AIDS.

The United Nations World Health Organization declared Nov. 28-Dec. 1 as International World AIDS Day.

Members from the Rutgers community presented a series of programs and events focused on raising awareness about AIDS and how to prevent and treat it.

Throughout the week, members of the community as well as the general public had a chance to get HIV counseling and screening.

They were also able to buy items which in return, raised money for the AIDS Resource Foundation for Children, a Newark non-profit that works with children orphaned or affected by AIDS.

In addition, Rutgers-Newark presented a panel on HIV quilt and a performance by UNITY Theatre, and screenings of AIDS-relation movies "And the Band Played On" and "Philadelphia."

Posters on campus read "In the U.S 14,518 people between the ages of 15 to 24 have been diagnosed with HIV since 2000. Protect yourself and those you care about."

According to the World Health Organization's website, 40.3 million people are infected with AIDS worldwide. More than 40 percent are women and 2.3 million are children.

HIV/AIDS is prevalent more in Africa and in developing nations.
