Newark Public School's Office of Guidance, with the help of the Provost's Office, hosted a college fair at the Paul Robeson Campus Center on Thursday, Dec. 8 to further the high school students' knowledge and options in choosing the right college.

E. Gonzalez-Torpe, the director of the guidance office that assists over 500 students from Newark Public Schools, said mostly juniors and seniors from the city's 12 high schools participated in the fair.

Thirty-eight colleges in New Jersey were represented that "had different programs and were diverse."

Students from Rutgers-Newark Community Outreach Program serve as ambassadors in reaching out to students at Newark Public Schools. Several efforts by the administration have been made to recruit high school students to attend Rutgers-Newark.

Recently, the Urban League of Essex County has recruited R-N student to help Newark public school students with reading, science, and math.

Gonzalez-Torpe said that fair is a good idea for students to come in and have their questions answered.

Recruiters from different colleges said that students had a very optimistic attitude in learning about colleges and programs it offers. Recruiter Angel Marie Howe-Cantor from County College of Monmouth said that she overheard conversations that students had with other representatives.

"Overall they were very intelligent and had very good questions," said Cantor.

Many students had concerns about handling college life and rigorous college courses. Students also expressed concerns over financial aid and scholarships.
