On Tuesday, Dec. 13, the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA), an undergrad student group at Rutgers-Newark, along with Deloit and Prudential Financial held a toy drive in the Essex Room of the Hilton Hotel in Newark.
Nearly 100 toys collected by the organizations went to the Court Appointed Special Advocate organization (CASA).
CASA recruits and trains community volunteers who follow court cases involving children and put the children into foster homes.
"I think it is wonderful, it is fabulous that ALPFA has donated all these toys to us. If not for ALPFA'S donations many children would not have a Christmas," said Kathy Slater, director of program services at CASA.
Denise Pacillas, president of the El Paso chapter of ALPFA, said, "To collect and donate toys to a organization like CASA is great because there children are getting a gift out of the blue, and it is going to be a nice surprise for them."
Karla Guevara, a senior accounting major who leads ALPFA, a student group in its first year on campus, said it's important for students to donate to organizations like CASA.
"I think every member of this organization wants to lead by example and we are doing this by donating to a good cause," she said.
