New Jersey Governor-elect Jon Corzine announced on Friday, Dec. 9 that Rep. Robert Menendez, (D-Hudson), would replace him in the U.S. Senate. This will make Menendez, a Cuban-American, one of three Latino senators in the Senate.
Menendez, 51, will fill the one-year unexpired term of Sen. Corzine who won the N.J. gubernatorial election in November.
Menendez spokesman Mathew Miller said the congressman plans to run for the Senate seat in the 2006 election.
He will face Republican opposition from state Sen. Tom Kean, Jr., son of former Governor Tom Kean.
Menendez is the congressmen from the 13th congressional district in Hudson County. He is the first Latino to hold a statewide office in New Jersey and the sixth Latino to hold a state-wide office position in the U.S.
"It is an honor and a privilege to replace Jon Corzine, and in return I will work hard everyday to represent all of New Jersey like Jon Corzine did," Menendez said.
Menendez graduated from Rutgers University School of Law-Newark in 1979.
Menendez remembers the times he had of trying to find money to go to college as he was the first in his family to go to college and law school.
One of his initiatives is to increase the HOPE Tax Credit to reflect increases in tuition and make it available for more New Jersey families.
Some other areas in which Menendez has strong view points are in health care and securing New Jersey against terrorism.
In the House, Menendez cosponsored and signed a discharge petition on the Patients' Bill of Rights to improve patient access to care and specialists and provide patients the right to sue and hold their plans accountable.
On homeland security in New Jersey Menendez introduced legislation to make rail, subway, bus and ferry systems safer from terrorist attacks.
