Women: Sanchez, Raiders Upend Kean

UNION, N.J. (Jan. 11) - Sophomore reserve guard Sabrina Sanchez, who netted a game-high 22 points, highlighted a decisive 12-0 run at the end of the first half with one of her three 3-point jumpers as Rutgers-Newark upset Kean, 60-54, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's basketball game in Harwood Arena.
Trailing 21-20 with 4:05 left in the opening period, senior Christyal Anderson started the run with a layup and a pair of free throws. Freshman guard Youngor Kehleay, who finished with 17 points, four assists and three steals, and sophomore forward Stephanie then scored inside before Sanchez ran the Scarlet Raider lead to 31-21 with a jumper from beyond the arc. A Kehleay free throw gave R-N an 11-point cushion at the break.
The Cougars trimmed the Raider lead to 46-44 with just 2:44 remaining before back-to-back layups by Kehleay and Anderson ignited a 9-0 run to give Rutgers-Newark some breathing room.
Sanchez also had five rebounds, three steals and two assists for the Raiders while Anderson finished with 10 rebounds, six points, three assists and two blocked shots.
The Cougars (10-4, NJAC 5-2) held the Raiders' top two scorers, Toni Roselli and Eni Fageyinbo just three and two points, respectively.
Kean was led by Shirley Fernandez with a dozen points and center Chari' Cooper with 12 rebounds. The Cougar held a 44-30 edge in rebounding, but the Raiders made 46.5 percent (20-43) of their field goals led by Sanchez's seven-of-11 performance from the floor.
