Have you ever looked at the cover of Sports Illustrated magazines and seen all those models with washboard abs? Didn't you regard these photos with a certain element of envy? Don't you wish that you too had abs of steel?

Well, this is possible right here at Rutgers, but it will probably take a great deal of work on your part. Firstly, before one can start on ones abdominal, one needs to get rid of excess fat around one's stomach, or lower one's body fat percentage.

The best way to eradicate this fat is to engage in a variety of callisthenic exercises including running. The more one runs, engages in aerobics, walks, swims or bikes, the more one burns calories. Burning all those calories is tantamount to burning fat as well, unless one is a firm believer in liposuction.

Losing fat is great, but how does one keep fat away? Dieting of course. It is important to consume food products that are high in proteins and moderate in carbohydrates and low in fat.

The third step on the road to acquiring wash board abs is exercising. The best form of exercise for this purpose is enrolling in and engaging in a fitness program. A number of such programs are being offered by the Golden Dome Recreational Center.

These courses start on January 30th 2006, and there is a wide variety to choose from. I myself will be instructing two of these courses: the Abdominal course (which will incorporate the use of over 100 different exercises geared toward achieving ones goal of attaining abs of steel), and the Hardcore Aerobic course (which incorporates hardcore-albeit graceless movement-for 45 minutes, nonstop).

Hardcore aerobics will be on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3-3:45 PM, followed shortly by abdominal training which will be from 4-4:45 PM. You do not have to attend both workouts, but it would only benefit you to do so.

My experience at teaching these two courses over the past three years has been gratifying, especially because of the overwhelming success that my students have seen. I am proud to say that a number of contestants in the Baruch-CUNY bodybuilding and fitness competitions, as well as a number of the varsity athletes have been my students in these courses.

It is my first season teaching these courses at Rutgers-Newark, and I firmly believe that they would be beneficial for the Rutgers family. Signing up for these courses is one of the best decisions that one could make for the New Year. Welcome back!
