It occurred to me that this university could benefit tremendously from a fitness competition.  In saying this, I want to clarify that a fitness competition is neither a bodybuilding nor a weightlifting competition.  A fitness competition would include a number of fitness events (which one would perhaps need to train at if one desires to attain proficiency in these skills.  The ideas I have for this competition are as follows:

The competition would be called the Mr. Rutgers-Newark Fitness competition and the Miss Rutgers-Newark Fitness competition.  These competitions will be open to all Rutgers students. The male competition would involve six events, namely: push-ups, sit-ups, chin-ups, dips, speed and agility, and endurance.  The female competition would encompass four events: sit-ups, push-ups, speed and agility and endurance.

Such a competition will be either a one-day affair or a two-day affair. The qualifying standards for such competitions will favor those competitors that possess good all-round fitness, and not just those who have superior skills in particular events.

The qualifying standards for the competitions would be as follows: Push-ups (men), at least 45; push-ups (women), at least 40. Chin-ups (men), 14. Sit-ups (men), 70; sit-ups (women), 50. Dips (men), 20. Endurance (men), three miles in 30 minutes; endurance (women), two miles in 30 minutes.

Speed and agility will not carry any qualifying standards, because I am as yet unaware of just how it might be executed.  Prospective participants in such competitions usually embark upon an intensive preparation that (even if it does not earn them the fitness title) inevitably improve their fitness level considerably.  Furthermore, if one is working towards a specific goal, one would be more motivated to push oneself even more.

If an adequate number of students (who think themselves up to the task) express an interest in the competition, then it will take place just after the spring break of 2006.  If you think this competition is for you, kindly e-mail me your comments at Leowynter@hotmail.com. In the meantime, start preparing for the competition.  It's going to be a blast!
