After a week of student voting in the Rutgers-Newark Program Board special election, Marquis Alvaradous was elected president and David Ortega treasurer.

Alvaradous received 130 votes, while Ortega received 89.

Out of 7,893 qualified voters in the Newark College of Arts and Sciences, the University College, the College of Nursing and the Graduate School, only 195 students, or 2.5 percent, cast a ballot.

The Program Board is the student organization charged with planning campus events. The Board is separate from the student governments and receives a budget from student fees.

The final day of voting was on Feb. 10.

The Board was forced to hold a special election after President Chris Ona resigned from his position last semester. Vice President Sheahan James became acting president.

The Program Board in the past few years has financed events like trips to Canada ,semi-formal and formal dinners, the Mr. & Mrs. Rutgers Pageant, the Indian Student Association Diwali Show, a culture night with the Organization of African Students and World Week.

The beginning balance for the Program Board in September 2005 was $29, 983.98, according to Program Board budget for 2005-2006.

Program Board secretary Lev D. Zilbermints said that Alvaradous is "really trying to get the Program Board to become more active."

"Because he was treasurer under Chris Ona, Marquis has the experience and knowledge to get the PB where it needs to be."

James said even though he was running for the presidency, Alvaradous was a better fit.

"He was more aptly prepared for the position. He performed extraordinary last semester," he said.
