You might be a bit lighter coming out of the Golden Dome Athletic Center than when you walked in - but no thanks to any exercise.

Just this month, at least two burglaries were reported to campus police from students who left property in unsecured lockers.

One student reported his black leather wallet, worth $35, stolen on March 6. Another student had his $50 Motorola cell phone taken from his jacket a week later on March 15.

In both cases, the athletic center thieves didn't have to flex any muscles: they found the items in un-locked lockers.

According to Lt. Bradley Morgan, Golden Dome locker room thefts occur between 10 to 15 times a year and 99 percent of the time the items are swiped from a locker that wasn't secured with a lock.

Although lockers are freely available, gym members must bring their own locks.

Officials say some gym patrons leave their items unlocked believing the area, which is accessible only to students, university staffers, and dues-paying community members, is safe enough to do so. All who enter the Golden Dome must present an ID at the front desk.
