Campus police are investigating a 911 call made by two Woodward Hall residents who reported hearing two unknown men enter their suite.
The female residents were in their bedroom when they heard voices belonging to two males enter the apartment at around 3 a.m. on March 12, police said.
The students, who live on the seventh floor, locked themselves in the room and called for help.
The strangers had left by the time Rutgers police responded.
RUPD Lt. Bradley Morgan said there was no break-in because the suite door was unlocked. No items were reported damaged or stolen.
"They were obviously somebody who resides in the building because there were no reported trespassers," Morgan said.
Woodward Hall, like Talbott Apartments, has a locked entrance that has to be buzzed open by a security guard who checks for ID.
