Parking in Newark has been an ongoing struggle for Rutgers-Newark students, but the Office of the Provost is looking to ease the parking situation as quickly as they can. And that, officials say, could take up to two whole years!
Executive Vice Provost Gene Vincenti said there are plans to build a new parking garage behind the old law school on Essex Street, but unanswered questions are prolonging construction.
"Should the lot be for faculty and students or is the Newark Library going to acquire the lot for its patrons," Vincenti said.
"The shape of the garage has to also be worked out. There will be no construction until questions as to the usage of the garage are figured out. Once that is settled, it will take 15 to 20 months to build.
"In total we are not looking at this garage being used for about two years," he said.
R-N is also in talks with NJ Transit about offering affordable incentives for more faculty and students to use public transportation.
Within two years there may be a new garage and different discount programs with NJ Transit, but until then, the only thing that faculty and students can do is continue to try and find a parking spot in the same parking decks and lots.
