On a day when the male fitness competition was postponed because of an inadequate amount of male participants, the women turned out with a great deal of enthusiasm.
From the outset, it was obvious that these Rytgers-Newark women were eager to display their fitness skills.
It was a fierce competition of four events, three of which had to be done twice.
The events were in push-ups, sit-ups, speed and agility and endurance.
At the end of the agonizing, yet satisfying day, Nadia Naranjo emerged as the overall winner and earned the title of Miss Rutgers Fitness.
Nadia won two of the four events: the push-up event (in which she executed 85 push-ups in two minutes), and the endurance event (in which she completed one mile in an amazing 7.04 minutes.
Nadia also placed second in the sit-ups event.
Nadia describes the experience as being very fulfilling.
"I had a wonderful time here today," she said. "I cannot wait for next semester to defend my crown."
The first runner up in the competition was graduate students Simal Ozen, who decimated the field in the sit-ups competition by doing 243 sit-ups in two minutes.
Simal, who gets her practice from attending the abdominal class in the Golden Dome Fitness center, placed second in the speed and agility competition, which was won by Coleen Steed, who completed the event in 42.78 seconds.
Steed emerged as the second runner-up.
The top four finishers in the event were: Nadia Naranjo, 74 points; Simal Ozen, 70 points; Coleen Steed, 68 points; and Amiriah Hamza with 60 points.
Hamza was especially amazing in the push-up competition, completeting 79 push-ups to place second behind Naranjo.
The top four finishers will be receiving trophies and other prizes during a ceremony at a date to be announced.
Nadia will be defending her title again in the fall semester. This time we hoped that the men will have the guts to participate as well.
