One man was killed and a woman is in critical condition after a shooting took place Jan. 24 in Newark, near the Route 78 ramp.
Police found the victims at 3 p.m. in a Jeep Cherokee, adjacent to Shaw Avenue and Leslie Street. The man was dead behind the wheel and the injured woman was in the front passenger seat, according to Police Director Garry McCarthy.
Police say the area is notorious for drug trades due to the easy accessibility of the interstate.
The victims were identified as Oliver Ballentine, 23, of Montville and Stephanie Shroeder, 21, of Mendham, said Detective Todd McClendon to the Star-Ledger.
No suspects have been identified nor has a motive been determined. "This is all the information we have so far," said McClendon to the Observer Thursday.
Though this homicide was number 10, deaths have been down a third since last year, according to Lupe Todd, a spokeswoman for Mayor Cory Booker. Todd told the Star-Ledger Booker was visiting Washington, D.C. to discuss legislation combating the circulation of illegal guns into innercities.
Newark reached triple figures with homicides in 2006.
