During both games this week, R-N men's basketball player Phil Slater was perfect from the free throw line. He led the 28-9 second quarter run over The College of New Jersey Saturday, breaking open the close game for the conference win at home. He finished with 27 points; earlier in the week against Montclair, he ended with 13 points. The senior point guard is majoring in criminal justice, and wants to test be to be a state trooper if he doesn't get picked up by a team stateside or aboard after graduation. He learned to play in the fourth grade, and taught himself. For his consistent play throughout the season and his upstanding effort this week, Slater is dubbed the Observer Player of the Week by a vote of 7-4.
If you were to have a basketball tournament in your name for charity, what charity would you fundraise for?
To clean up the streets up Newark and build better basketball courts. I always hated that growing up. I went to University high school. I like college more than high school because I have more freedom and more fun. I live with Stephen Taylor (former R-N men's basketball player), Marlin, and Kwon. That's not really his name, but that's what we call him. He's always studying. I don't study as much as I should. I'm taking 13 credits.
What's the team like without Jermont Horton? Is it odd for you not to have him on the court with you?
No, it's a different team than what it was before. Not strange. We had a lot more offensive power, but we have a lot of depth. There's a thing called chemistry. I love all the guys on the team. They are fun to be around, on the court and off. We're always together.
Who makes you laugh the most?
Quran (Wimberley).
What do you think of your head coach?
He's cool. A good guy, but he yells too much.
What is something that most people don't know about you?
I'm very talented at mostly everything. I play baseball, tennis, and run track. I like to draw, nothing specific, just things that strike me. I started playing the trumpet in elementary school and the piano in high school. I'm an extremely hard worker.
If you could be any superhero, who would you be?
Spiderman. He's cooler than Superman. Superman's personality is corny.
