Some Rutgers-Newark students are seeing red after learning about the controversial ticket distribution policy for the Rutgers University football team.
Despite the fact that Rutgers Stadium seats 41,500 spectators, the R-N campus was only offered 30 tickets to each game at the beginning of the season. In addition, students must also pay $20 for each ticket, whereas students in New Brunswick receive tickets for free.
Mark Griffin, director of athletics at R-N, said he has consulted with R-NB for more tickets and that the NB athletic department increased the number of tickets to "about a hundred." However, the R-N students are still charged.
R-N students must also go to the athletic department in the Golden Dome to get the tickets in person. However, in New Brunswick, students are able to request them online in advance and are notified electronically if they will receive them.
Currently, R-N enrolls 6,500 undergraduate students and some of them say the ticket distribution system gives Newark the shaft. "We are a campus of Rutgers University," said Ramsey Abdalla, a junior at R-N. "All three campuses are important to the University as a whole--this is very unfair."
Sukhvir Banipal, a senior at R-N, said he has gone to one football game and thinks every student should experience the big college football atmosphere. "It was great," Bunipal said. "I feel that it definitely helped my college experience and gave me a better connection with the school."
