Injuries hurt Raiders

Four men's bball players on the DL, down for the count in the 75-69 loss to Farmingdale

Junior forward David Cherry poured in a game-high 23 points and senior forward Derryck Alexander hauled down a game-high 15 rebound, but Rutgers-Newark could not overcome the absence of four injured players in a 75-69 loss to Farmingdale State.

The Scarlet Raiders (5-4) stayed with the Rams (5-4) until the final minute.

Raider senior guard Angel Collado knocked down a jumper with 57 seconds left to knot the score at 69-69.

But, junior guard Damien Santana dropped in six unanswered free throws in the final 35 seconds make the difference.

Collado finished with 10 points, five assists and four rebounds for the Raiders who also got 15 points and four rebounds from sophomore guard James Johnson.

Down by a dozen with 13:31 left, Rutgers-Newark refused to let the Rams break away, whittling the Farmingdale lead to 52-49 with 9:58 left when Cherry dropped in one of his two treys and Johnson followed with a jumper in the paint.

Farmingdale went back up by 10 points on a fast-break layup by Santana with 6:16 remaining, but Collado had five points and Cherry, four, in the 15-5 rally which evened the score for the only time in the second half.

Sophomore forward Phil Barnes came off the bench for eight points and five rebounds to keep things close.

Santana finished with 16 points, nine defensive rebounds, seven assists and three steals to pace the Rams while junior forward Erastus Shannon posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior guard Peter Lipka chipped in 14 points by knocking down four of five 3-point tries.

Farmingdale won the game at the free throw line, making 16 of 19 attempts, compared to a seven for 12 night by Rutgers-Newark.

All-NJAC junior guard Chadd Barnes, junior center Afolabi Ajumobi and sophomore forward Deshawn Singleton were missing for the second game in a row because of minor injuries. They were joined by junior forward Ryan Gillens who sat out the evening with an ankle injury.

The quartet is expected back in the lineup when Rutgers-Newark resumes play in two weeks following a break for fall semester exams.

The Raiders will host Hunter in a women's and men's doubleheader on Sunday, Dec. 30, in The Golden Dome.
