It was a rough week all around for Rutgers athletics, on both the Newark and New Brunswick campuses. The Piscataway-based Scarlet Knights football team rallied in the fourth quarter, but worsened its record to 1 and 4, losing 24-17 to West Virginia in their first Big East Conference game of the season.
Next week, the Knights take on the Cincinnati Bearcats away, and seek to improve their season with a big win over a Big East opponent.
In Scarlet Raiders women's tennis, senior Nicole and junior Monica Iturralde posted singles wins and together took the No. 1 doubles match against Baruch College, but it wasn't enough, as the Scarlet Raiders lost 6-3, at The Golden Dome in Newark. The Scarlet Raiders dropped their second straight match. Their season record is now 8-5 after the most recent action. Rutgers-Newark faces the College of Saint Elizabeth at home on Oct 7 at 4 pm.
Scarlet Raiders men's soccer went toe-to-toe with Richard Stockton in a red-hot New Jersey Athletic Conference soccer match, falling 1-0 to the Ospreys on Alumni Field on a late goal. The Scarlet Raider backline, led by junior captain Luis Valle, made an outstanding defensive effort against the Osprey attack, which has scored 30 goals in its last five games. In a close match from start to finish, the Ospreys got a lucky break; something that has eluded the Scarlet Raiders all season.
Here is a summary of Rutgers-Newark based sporting events for the upcoming week:
